Omeprazole<\/a>\u00a0is used to treat certain\u00a0stomach<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0esophagus<\/a>\u00a0problems (such as\u00a0acid reflux<\/a>, ulcers). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your\u00a0stomach<\/a>\u00a0makes. It relieves symptoms such as\u00a0heartburn<\/a>, difficulty swallowing, and persistent\u00a0cough<\/a>. This\u00a0medication<\/a>\u00a0helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent\u00a0cancer<\/a>\u00a0of the esophagus. Omeprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).<\/p>\n

If you are self-treating with this medication, over-the-counter omeprazole products are used to treat frequent\u00a0heartburn<\/a>\u00a0(occurring 2 or more days a week). Since it may take 1 to 4 days to have full effect, these products do not relieve\u00a0heartburn<\/a>\u00a0right away.<\/p>\n

Precautions<\/h2>\n

Before taking\u00a0omeprazole<\/a>, tell your doctor or\u00a0pharmacist<\/a>\u00a0if you are allergic to it; or to similar drugs (such as\u00a0esomeprazole<\/a>,\u00a0lansoprazole<\/a>,\u00a0pantoprazole<\/a>); or if you have any other\u00a0allergies<\/a>. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.<\/p>\n

Before using this\u00a0medication<\/a>, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:\u00a0liver<\/a>\u00a0disease,\u00a0lupus<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some symptoms may actually be signs of a more serious condition.
